why don’t you paint or draw a nice background that you think your fish may like, and then put it behind the tank. i have a couple different ones made-a rainbow and sky, and one with an underwater scene. the fish seem to swim towards them more when they like how it looks. you can also try putting some small rocks in the tank to make a little cave. i made one out of three rocks (two next to each other and one across the top) and it looks nice and gives the fish something to swim through and enjoy. good luck!

Live plants are what I usually recommend. I like the “natural” look a lot better. This site has some good recommendations for live plants. - - Hornwort works well in goldfish tanks because it is lush and it can survive their grazing. If you want something to provide a good backdrop for your tank, Hornwort is a good start. It is cheap and easy to find. Chain stores sell it.
As a backdrop, you could also use rock in place of (or in addition to) the paper you used on the back. If you use your own rock make sure you know what it is before you put it in the tank. This webpage has information on what type of rocks are safe for your goldfish tank - - Local pet stores (not chain stores) will often sell rocks for this purpose.

natural is always the best look!
honestly go to petsmart and get a black and blue reversable background. A bag of natural or black gravel. and a couple live plants!

I don’t have a background in my tank but the wall behind my tank is tongue and groove cedar. I have natural gravel, a good size log the fish can swim thru and lots of green. All the plants are fake. The grass plants are very fine, I got them at PetSmart. I have a leafy plant that is autumn colors and a fern looking plant behind the log. None of my plants are that hard plastic, they’re all cloth-like.
